Measure the storage you have
How many litres does your water tank hold, and how many days will it last?
Enter the inside dimensions of a round or rectangular tank. See its capacity, water available now, and estimated household reserve days.
Capacity and reserve
Irregular shape, wall thickness, unusable bottom water, and changing daily use alter the result. This is not structural, plumbing, or drinking-water safety design.

How the calculation works
All dimensions are first converted to metres. One cubic metre equals 1,000 litres. Reserve days divide the water available now by entered daily household use.
rectangular volume = inside length × inside width × inside heightround-cylinder volume = π × (inside diameter ÷ 2)² × inside heightcapacity litres = volume in m³ × 1,000available litres = capacity × current fill %daily household use = people × entered litres/person/dayreserve days = available litres ÷ daily household use
Feet convert with the exact factor 0.3048 m and centimetres with 0.01 m. Reduce the fill level for a conservative estimate if some bottom water cannot be drawn.

Worked example
A rectangular tank has inside dimensions 2 m by 1.5 m by 1 m and is 80% full. The example household has four people using an illustrative 100 L per person each day.
2 × 1.5 × 1 = 3.00 m³पूरा volumefull volume
3.00 × 1,000 = 3,000 Lपूरा क्षमताfull capacity
3,000 × 80% = 2,400 Lअहिले भएको पानीwater available now
4 × 100 = 400 L/dayघरको दैनिक प्रयोगdaily household use

Sources and assumptions
- NIST, Circumference, Area and Volume, updated 18 May 2026 and checked 29 Aug 2026. NIST gives rectangular capacity as length × width × depth and cylinder volume as 0.7854 × diameter² × height.
- NIST Guide to the SI, Appendix B.9, updated 18 Aug 2025 and checked 29 Aug 2026. It supports the length and volume unit conversions used here.
- Nepal Urban Water Supply and Sanitation Project, Design Guidelines Version 4.0, checked 29 Aug 2026. The official guidance uses 100 litres/person/day for fully plumbed private connections and lower design values for some other service levels.
- WHO, Domestic Water Quantity, Service Level and Health, second edition, checked 29 Aug 2026. WHO explains that household water quantity varies with accessibility, reliability, price, and the uses being met.
100 L/person/day planning example The 100 L/person/day value is a planning example, not a claim about your home. Inside dimensions are best for tank capacity, while a meter or observed daily use is best for reserve days.
